Currently there are 250 million Sacagawea Dollar coins on reserve that are not in circulation due to lack of demand. The legislation requires that for every two Presidential Dollars that are made, a new Sacagawea Dollar must also be made. There are four different Presidential Dollar coins scheduled for issue in 2007. Each coin will show the face of Washington, Adams, Jefferson, or Madison. If 25 million Sacagawea Dollar coins are made by the end of 2007 to meet the legislation’s quota and each of the Presidential Dollar coins is produced in equal number, what is the greatest number of each of the Presidential Dollar coins that can be made?
I think the first sentence does not matter, since they must MAKE a new Sacagawea dollar for every two presidential dollars.
If 25 million are made, then 50 million presidential dollars can be made. More than that, and they’d have to make more Sacagaweas, right?
If they make an equal number of each president, that means 12.5 million of each president will be made.
On the other hand, this may be a poorly worded question. Perhaps they mean that to meet the quote, they must make an additional 25 million and assume that the original 250 million are considered “made” and only need to be “circulated”. In this case, there will be 250+25 million Sacagawea dollars, and twice that many presidential dollars. 1/4 of these will be for each president:
(250+25)*2/4, or 275/2 million, or 137.5 million for each president.
Depends on how you interpret the question.
