If 2 bodies are at different temperatures, is it necessary that they will come to equilibrium?

if 2 bodies are at diff. temp. then they should give n take heat n come to equilibrium temp.
but i saw sumthing peculiar yesterday. dont know whether our physics book was talking crap or its a property of mercury thermometer.

i was doing the latent heat experiment to find the melting point of wax full of impurities n dust

so i melt the wax, found the melting point to be 61 deg.
then when the wax had solidified, i kept it on the table, the thermometer still dipping in it
i kept it like this overnight for it to cool down to room temp.
in the morning, the temp. of the solid wax was 22 deg.
i thought that this would be the room temp.
but as soon as i took out the thermometer from the wax, the mercury rose to 28 deg-temp. of air.
no, i wasnt touching the bulb of thermometer.

theoretically, both the wax and air should be at the same temperature. Cant figure the matter out.

Probably the room temperature at night was down around 18-22 degrees, and the block cooled to that temperature overnight.

When the heat came on in the morning and air temp rose to 28º, but it takes many hours for the inside of the wax block to warm up to that temp, and it had risen only a part of that when you looked at the thermometer.

Alternate solution: the thermometer when it measured 28º was in the sun, or in a warmer than normal place. 28º is quite warm.
