why small porcelian chips or stones are added to the liquid while boiling?

On the surfaces of these boiling chips are very tiny cavities. Each of these cavities traps air, and when the solution boils, it prevent the build up of air pressure in the solution, by releasing air in the form of small bubbles.
If no boiling chips is added, the pressure buildup will become too high to be sustain in the liquid, and the system will reduce the pressure by forming big bubbles. This will make boiling uneven during an experiment, and can also result in the loss of products.
