Is it illegal to produce and self-publish a guide book to a television show?
I am wondering whether or not it is illegal to self publish an unauthorised guide book to a 60s television show or would copyright need to be sought?
The guide would feature mainly new information rather than just copying previously written episode summeries etc.
You should check the law, a sixties show’s copyright may have expired, in the same way that anyone can make and sell Elvis records legally. Besides that, if you contact the producers of the programmme they may be happy to give you permission. They might ask to be shown it before you publish it. Not only this but they may be helpful and provide you with interviews and other material that you wouldn’t be able to get elsewhere. There’s no harm in asking.
